Brittle hair: restoring strength and elasticity

Does your hair snap when you brush it? Do you find strands on your jumper, in the shower, on your pillowcase? It's often the sign of weakened, sensitised hair that has lost its natural resilience. At OWA Colors, we tackle this problem at the root – no pun intended – with an all-round approach that combines the free Morpho-Conseil consultation, an in-depth treatment and suitable everyday habits.

Key points

  • Breakage often comes from repeated habits: vigorous brushing, tight hair ties, friction.
  • Always a heat protector before the straightener, curling iron or blow-dry.
  • Brittle hair needs strengthening treatments, not just moisture.
  • Avoid: tying your hair up when wet and rubbing with an ordinary towel (choose microfibre).

Why does your hair break?

Brittle hair isn't necessarily hair that falls out: it fragments, crumbles, snaps cleanly at different lengths. This creates a "rat's tail" effect on the ends, uneven strands and an overall feeling of thinning. The causes are many and sometimes invisible at first glance.

The most common causes of hair breakage

Repeated mechanical stress

Brushing too vigorously, tight hair ties, friction against clothes or the pillow: all of this weakens the fibre, especially if it's already sensitised. These harmless-seeming habits, repeated every day, gradually weaken the hair shaft. Friction at night against cotton pillowcases, hairstyles that are too tight or unsuitable accessories (rigid plastic brushes, unsuitable combs) can gradually damage the surface of the hair, until it breaks.

Heat without protection

Straightener, curling iron, daily blow-dry without heat-protecting spray: the keratin is altered, the cuticles lift, the fibre weakens. In the long run, this leads to increased dryness, loss of shine and a change in the hair's natural elasticity. Always using suitable heat protection, choosing temperature-controlled tools and spacing out heat styling help to preserve the fibre.

Repeated colouring and bleaching

The more you change the hair's structure, the more you alter its internal cohesion. Lightening works by destroying part of the hair's natural pigment, and weakens its structure along the way: the fibre becomes porous and more brittle. Without strengthening treatments, it becomes thinner, splits and breaks more easily.

Lack of targeted repairing treatments

Moisturising isn't always enough: brittle hair also needs strengthening treatments (proteins, ceramides). Combined with moisturising treatments, they make it more supple and limit breakage. A very damaged section won't become like new, though: only a cut removes it.

The OWA Colors method to strengthen your hair

1. Free Morpho-Conseil consultation

We analyse your hair history, your styling habits, the condition of your lengths and your goals. The aim: to understand where the breakage comes from, so we can act appropriately.

2. Strengthening protocol inspired by the Résistance range

Depending on the level of breakage and porosity, we combine:

  • A gentle, strengthening shampoo
  • A fibre-resurfacing treatment
  • A heat-protecting styling product

3. A suitable home routine

We recommend a personalised treatment frequency, gentle drying techniques, and light but strengthening homecare products. The aim? To make the benefits of the salon treatment last without overloading the fibre.

Mistakes to avoid when you have brittle hair

  • Tying your hair up when wet
  • Using an ordinary towel (choose a microfibre one instead)
  • Leaving a protein treatment on for too long
  • Leaving too long between cuts (on fragile hair, split ends spread more quickly)
