Unruly hair: taming frizz without weighing it down

Does your hair puff up at the slightest hint of humidity? Does it frizz, curl or wave out of control? Do you spend ages straightening it… only for the result not to last? Welcome to daily life with unruly hair, sensitive to changes in the weather, to friction, or simply to its own nature. At OWA Colors, we don't try to force it, but to understand it. Thanks to our face-shape & treatment approach, every fibre finds its rightful place, while respecting its natural movement.

Key points

  • Humidity makes porous hair swell: it needs nourishing and protecting.
  • Detangle in the shower, on damp hair, with a wide-tooth comb; don't brush dry.
  • An iron that isn't too hot (generally 185 °C at most, less on fine or damaged hair), always heat protection and few passes: this limits damage.
  • A silk pillowcase limits frizz.

This article replaces the old pages on Kérastase's Discipline range. No more standard online promises: instead, a genuinely personalised solution in the salon.

Why is your hair unruly?

Unruly hair isn't "difficult", it's simply sensitive. Its fibre is often porous, its shape irregular, and its behaviour depends enormously on the environment (humidity, heat, friction, pollution). The result: it reacts unpredictably.

And contrary to popular belief, straightening harder or fixing for longer doesn't improve hold. On the contrary, over time it can weaken the hair and make frizz worse.

Common causes of losing control of your hair

Humidity in the air

The water in the air gets into the porous fibre, makes it swell, and causes frizz and unruly volume. This is all the more noticeable on damaged, coloured or naturally textured hair, whose cuticles are already open. Without a protective barrier or anti-humidity film, the hair absorbs moisture, swells and becomes hard to style. The "fluffy hair" effect is the typical sign of a fibre that reacts excessively to humidity.

Lack of targeted nourishment

Hair starved of lipids or keratin reacts in a disorderly way. Dry, porous hair reacts more to humidity and becomes harder to style. A suitable nourishing treatment smooths the cuticles and helps it resist humidity better.

The wrong brushing

Brushing curly, coily or wavy hair when dry breaks its natural shape and releases frizz. A simple habit that can ruin an entire routine. Textured hair needs to be handled gently: it's best to detangle in the shower, with a wide-tooth comb, on hair that is still damp. This keeps curls defined, limits breakage, and avoids creating the static electricity behind that famous "halo" of frizz around the head.

Too much heat

Straightening irons, daily blow-dries, badly set straighteners: all habits that stress the hair without changing its nature. Excessive heat damages the fibre: split ends, loss of elasticity. Instead of disciplining it, you end up with limp, brittle, dull hair. No temperature is completely without effect: turning the heat down (generally 185 °C at most, less on fine or damaged hair), always using heat protection and limiting the number of passes are the habits that limit damage.

The OWA Colors method to discipline without freezing

1. Free Morpho-Conseil consultation

We start by analysing your hair's texture, its natural behaviour, its environment (work, sport, city, etc.) and how you'd like to style it. The aim? To work with your hair, not force it.

2. In-salon protocol inspired by the Discipline range

Depending on your needs, we offer you:

  • A smoothing shampoo
  • A nourishing, disciplining treatment (without weighing hair down)
  • An expert blow-dry with a diffuser nozzle or a straightener at 185°C max
  • Care and heat-protection habits to adopt at home

This protocol is completed by the techniques of our hairdressers, designed to smooth the fibre while limiting harshness.

3. Tips to make the effect last at home

A suitable washing routine, anti-frizz protection, gentle styling, choosing a silk pillowcase, how often to have treatments… Every recommendation helps you stay in control, even on rainy days.

Mistakes to avoid at all costs

  • Brushing textured hair once it's dry
  • Using an iron that is too hot (generally not above 185 °C)
  • Forgetting heat protection
  • Layering styling products without a structured routine

Client review

"Great salon! Great service! Really not to be missed, you won't be disappointed ☺️

My colour and highlights are exactly as I wanted and on top of that, a botox treatment to repair my frizzy hair!

A big thank you to Aurèlie and Lana for taking care of my hair!" – Laura in March 2025 at Owa Colors Cagnes sur mer (review translated from French)

In conclusion: tame without dominating

At OWA Colors, we believe that textured hair can be magnificent… as long as you give it what it needs. The aim isn't to transform, but to reveal. And that's the whole difference an expert treatment makes.
